97t.gif (2080 bytes) Grade 4 to grade 12 computer enthusiasts from Okotoks, Strathmore and Calgary came together over the May 23rd weekend in the 17th Calgary Region Schools' Computer Programming Competition.

During the Creative Programming section held on the Friday evening, students presented the innovative computer programs that their team has developed over the past months. Teams of judges evaluated software and hardware projects based on how well the students had organized their ideas and their ability to express their enthusiasm and knowledge for what they have done.

On the Saturday, students were given the opportunity to show their computing knowledge and ability to think on their feet in the Problem Solving portion of the competition. While the judges evaluated the 400+ programs from 80 teams, the competitors attended the 5th Western Canadian Robot Games also held on the SAIT campus.

Other activities open to students were Computer Art and Competition Logo design (see picture). Most of the coaching for the competition was done by teachers and parents outside of regular school hours.

The competition was also an opportunity for Calgary's software community to generate a positive attitude in the students towards the expanding capacity of computer science and computer engineering. They did this by encouraging volunteers for the judging and providing generous awards. Junior and Senior High students who did particularly well in all aspects of the competition were provided with scholarships from TransCanada Pipelines Ltd. and Merak. Hewlett Packard provided
graphics calculators to winners in the Elementary School Division. The Calgary Programming Society would like to thank all of the sponsors.

The 17th Calgary Region Schools's Computer Programming Competition is put on by the Calgary Programming Society. This is formed of volunteers from both Calgary School boards, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Calgary, Thomas Riley Computing Centre at S.A.I.T. and local industry. The 18th competition will be held in May 1998.  For more information see the Competition web page at www.cps.enel.ucalgary.ca
